After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, the former basketball player, Tyrone Gilliams co-founded a commodity trading firm called "TL Gilliams" along with Everette Scott Jr. Gilliams claimed that he had a U.S. Treasury STRIPS Trading program which was virtually risk-free. This convinced many businessmen to purchase large shares of STRIPS.
Gilliams used 1 million dollars stolen from the investors for hosting a black-tie event in Philadelphia called “Joy to the World.” He also invested a huge amount of money in a comedy show in the Bahamas. He used the money to invest in gold ventures and also in buying luxuries such as cars, jewelry etc.
In 2011, a group of federal agents tracked him down and all of his fraud schemes and cases of laundering were exposed. In 2013, he was imprisoned for 10 years.
Since the beginning of his prison term, Gilliams had appealed his case several times and even requested to be released on bail. His efforts were of no help and he is still in prison after his case. According to the sources, his release date is said to be on November 14, 2022.
