Professionally, Mikaela is a World Cup alpine skier. Her World Cup debut was on March 11, 2011, at Špindlerův Mlýn in the Czech Republic. In the month of April, some weeks following her 16th birthday, she was the winner of the slalom title at the US National Championships at Winter Park, Colorado. This made her the youngest American ski racer to win a national alpine crown.
Shiffrin first World Cup race win was in December 2012 when she was 17, in a night slalom in Åre, Sweden. This helped her become the second-youngest American to win an alpine World Cup event, following Judy Nagel (17 yr, 5 mo.). Mikaela's second win occurred two weeks after, at a night slalom at Zagreb, Croatia. Her third win happened 11 days after, at a different night slalom in Flachau, Austria. After she won the slalom at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide, she was able to secure the 2013 season title in the slalom discipline. Even after spending most of her last two years of high school in Europe on the World Cup circuit, she still managed to graduate on time from Burke Mountain Academy in June.
Shiffrin began the 2018 season as she placed 5th in giant slalom at Sölden. In early December she played in downhill at Lake Louise, where she got to her first downhill podium. The very next day, she was able to win her first downhill race in her 4th ever start. So far, she has had amazing success in her career.
