Born in 1944 October 15, Ivey is the only child of Boadman Nettles Ivey and Barbara Ivey. She grew up in Camden, Alabama. During her early years, Kay helped her father in his farm.
Regarding her education, Kay attended Auburn University where she was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta. She was the president during her first-year pledge class. All through her college years, Kay also served in the Student Government Association.

Kay first worked as a high school teacher and later on landed a position with Merchants National Bank. From the year of 1985 to 1998 Kay served for the Alabama Commission on Higher Education as the Director of Government Affairs and Communications.
From 2003 to 2011, Kay worked as the State Treasurer. On the year of 2011, Kay was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor after winning against Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom, Jr., with 45,476 more votes. She served as the Lieutenant until 2017.
After the resignation of Robert Bently on 10th April 2017, Kay swore in the position of Governor of Alabama. In the entire state's history, Kay became the second female governor.
