Professionally, Juan is a professional tennis player who started playing tennis when he was just seven years old. He was coached by Marcelo Gómez. He was discovered by Italian ex-tennis professional Ugo Colombini, who was with him through the initial phases of his young career. Today, he is his agent and close friend.

As a junior, del Potro beat Marin Čilić and Pavel Tchekov and won the 2012 Orange Bowl 14s title. Receiving wild cards three times to participate in three ITF Circuit events in Argentina, he lost in the first round of each game. In 2005, he was ranked #3 in the combined junior world rankings.

Defeating Matias Niemiz in 2004, he won his first senior match at the ITF Circuit event held in Buenos Aires. He won a tournament in Antofagasta later that year reaching the quarterfinals at an ITF Circuit event in Campinas, Brazil.
