Jonathan Larson: Death

Jonathan unexpectedly died in the morning of the first preview performance Off-Broadway of Rent. He suffered from an aortic dissection and it is believed to have been caused by the undiagnosed Marfan syndrome in the early morning on 25th January 1996.

The New York State medical investigators concluded that if the aortic dissection was properly diagnosed and treated, Jonathan would have lived. He had been suffering from the severe chest pains, dizziness, as well as shortness of breath for few days before his death.

But the doctors at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Cabrini Medical Center couldn’t find the signs of an aortic aneurysm even after a chest X-ray and ECG. Because of that, the doctors misdiagnosed it as the flu or stress.
