Cejudo's wrestling career started in 2006 when he won National freestyle tournament organized by American Wrestling Federation. After that, he spent most of his time training himself at United States Olympic Training Center.

He continuously gave amazing performances in Pan American Games and Championships. After a long period of training and practices, he successfully won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics held in Beijing in 2008.

He was titled youngest winner of Olympics during that time. After gaining this title, In 2012, Cejudo decided to retire from freestyle wrestling and started his career as a mixed martial artist.
