A native of Grinnell, Iowa, USA, Danai Gurira was born on 14th February of the year 1978. She is now 40 years old. Gurira was born as the youngest child among four children to her parents Roger Gurira and Josephine Gurira.
Her father is a college librarian whereas her mother is a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the Grinnell College. Her other family members include her two elder sisters Shingai and Choni and one elder brother Tare. She resided in Grinnell until December of 1983 when she was 5years old.
After that, her family moved to Harare which is the capital of Zimbabwean. Growing up, Danai went to get her education from the Dominican Convent High School. She also studied at Macalester College from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.
Additionally, Gurira has also attended New York University’s Tisch School of Arts and earned Master of Fine Arts in Acting.

During her career till now, Gurira has written four plays which are: Continuum in 2005, Eclipsed in 2009, The Convert in 2012, and Familiar in 2012.
In 2007, Gurira guest starred in a drama film The Visitor for which she has also won the Method Fest Independent Film Festival Award for the Best Supporting Actress. Since then, she has appeared in many movies and TV series such as Ghost Town, Black Panther, Mother of George, All Eyez on Me, Treme, Law & Order, Robot Chicken, Lie to Me and more.
It was in the year 2009 when Danai made her acting debut on the Broadway in a play named as Joe Turner’s Come and Gone in which she played as Martha Pentecost.
