The first acting role that Mull is known for was as Garth Gimble in the 1976 television nighttime absurdist soap opera Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. This made it possible for him to work in the spin-off comedy talk shows Fernwood 2 Night in 1977) and America 2-Night in 1978. In America 2-Night, he performed talk show host Barth Gimble (Garth Gimble's twin brother), opposite Fred Willard, as sidekick Jerry Hubbard.

Mull came into show business as a songwriter, composing Jane Morgan's 1970 country single, A Girl Named Johnny Cash. It was at its peak at #61 on Billboard's country charts. Eventually, he began his own recording career.
