Julian Castro is an American by his nationality. He is a Democratic politician who had served as the 16th US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama from the year 2014 to 2017.

Julian has also served as a mayor of San Antonio, Texas from 2009 until joining the cabinet of Obama in 2014. Recently on 12th January of 2019, he launched a campaign for the Democratic nomination for the President of the US in 2020 in San Antonio.

Julian Castro is originally from San Antonio, Texas, USA. He came into this world on 16th September of the year 1974 which has now made him reach at the age of 44. Castro was born to his parents Jessie Guzman and Maria Castro.

Additionally, he also has an identical twin brother named Joaquin Castro who is the current US Representative. Julian is just a minute older than Joaquin. Their father is a retired mathematics teacher as well as the political activist whereas their mother was a Chicana political activist who has helped to establish the Chicano political party La Raza Unida and who also ran unsuccessfully for San Antonio City Council in 1971.

For his education, Julian went to study at the Thomas Jefferson High School located in San Antonio. There, he played football, tennis, and basketball and also collected trading cards. Skipping his sophomore year, Castro graduated in 1992 and was ranked 9th in the class.

After that, he attended Stanford University from where he completed his graduation in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and communications. He later got enrolled at the Harvard Law School and earned himself a Juris Doctor in 2000.

Julian is a married man. He is married to his wife named Erica Lira who is an elementary school teacher. The pair tied their knots with each other in 2007 and since then, they are living their life blissfully.

Julian Castro: Career

It was in the year 2001 when Julian was elected to the San Antonio City Council. At the age of 26, he became the youngest city councilman in the history of San Antonio. As a councilman from 2001 to 2005, Castro opposed a PGA-approved golf course as well as a large-scale real estate development on the outer rim of the city.

Again in 2005, he ran for the mayor of San Antonio and was widely viewed as a front runner in the field which also included the retired judge Phil Hardberger and a conservative city councilman Carroll Schubert. Julian was then defeated by approximately 4000 votes when Phil received 51.5% of the votes.

Castro again ran for the mayor of San Antonio in 2009 announcing his candidacy on 5th November 2008. He then won the election on 9th May of 2009 with the 56.23% of the votes. By winning, Julian became the 5th Latino mayor in the San Antonio history.

Castro serves as the mayor of San Antonio until he joined the cabinet of Obama in the year 2014. Julian was mentioned as the possible running mate for Hillary Clinton during a 2016 Presidential Campaign.
