Jo Andres: Career

Jo Andres first became known on kinetic downtown New York performance scene of the 1980s for her movie/dance/light performances shown at the reigning venues of the era such as The Performing Garage, P.S. 122, La Mama E.T.C., St. Marks Danspace, and the Collective for Living Cinema.

As a filmmaker, Jo drew acclaim as well as awards for a 1996 film known as Black Kites that aired on PBS and was also played in several of the film festivals including Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, London, and Human Rights Watch Film Festivals.

She also directed music and art videos and her own film performance works. In addition to that, Andres was also a dance consultant to the acclaimed Wooster Group. Jo was also an artist in the residence at leading universities, museums, and the art colonies which also included Yaddo and the Rockefeller Study Center located in Bellagio, Italy.
