James Brown was an American musician, singer-songwriter, dancer, and record producer. Brown is referred to as the "Godfather of Soul" for acting as a progenitor of funk music. He is considered a huge figure of 20th Century music and dance. Brown has received honors such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame.

James Brown was born to Susie Behling and Joseph Gardner Brown on May 3, 1933, in Barnell, South Carolina, United States. He grew up in extreme poverty in a town called Elko in South Carolina. When he was about four or five, his family moved to Augusta, Georgia where they lived with his aunt. His mother left them after she couldn't handle her abusive marriage.

James appeared in talent shows at a young age and managed to win a show in Augusta's Lenox Theater in 1944 after singing the ballad "So Long". He had a boxing career for a short time as a teenager. When Brown was 16, he was sent to a juvenile detention center after being convicted of robbery. He was paroled in June 1952.

Brown was married to American singer Tomi Rae Hynie from 2001 to 2006. They have a son, James Joseph Brown II. James had three failed marriages before Tomi. He has more than 10 children.

Unfortunately, he died due to pneumonia on December 25, 2006, in Emory University Hospital Midtown, Georgia, United States.

James Brown: Professional Life

James Brown started his career as a gospel singer. He later joined The Famous Flames, previously known as the Gospel Starlighters, and emerged as their lead singer with hit ballads like Please, Please, Please. The Famous Flames was founded in Toccoa, Georgia by Bobby Byrd in 1953.  The group consisted of members including James Brown, Sylvester Keels, Doyle Oglesby, Fred Pulliam, Nash Knox, and Nafloyd Scott.

In 1957, the original band broke up and the group was named James Brown and The Famous Flames. Their ballad Try Me was released on October 1958, and it hit number one on the R&B chart at the beginning of 1959. Brown applied a different Africanized approach to his music during the late 1960s, which heavily influenced his funk sound in the 1970s.

Brown is ranked seventh on the Rolling Stone's list of its 100 greatest artists of all time. The magazine has also cited Brown as the most sampled artist of all time. His last appearance on television was at his induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame in November 2006.
