Ashley started off her acting career in 1959, playing her first role as Esmeralda in the play named “Dirty Hands”. After that, she played the lead character in Broadway's "Roman Candle" and "Mary, Mary". Later, she earned the role of "Mollie" character in the play “Take Her, She’s Mine” due to which she earned a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress.

Due to her amazing performance and hard work, she also got a Theatre World award. Not only that, but Elizabeth also got nominated for her performance in Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park”. Later, she received a nomination for her work in Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”.
