Talking about his professional career, Dennis was selected with 9th overall pick in 2017 NBA Draft by Dallas Mavericks. He then signed a rookie contract on 5th July of the year 2017. While Smith would be out of the action during 2017 NBA Summer League held in Orlando, he would return to action just in time for an event in Las Vegas.

Under the 6 games that he played with Mavericks in Las Vegas, Dennis recorded 4.8 rebounds, 17.3 points, 2.2 steals and 4.2 assists per game under the 25.9 minutes of the action. It made him earn All-Summer League First Team Honors.

On 18th October 2017, Dennis made his debut in the season opener of Mavericks, a 117-111 loss to Atlanta Hawks where he scored 16 points and 10 assists. That same year on 29th December, Smith recorded his first career triple-double with 10 rebounds, 21 points, and 10 assists in 128-120 win over New Orleans Pelicans.
