Cardinal McCarrick is originally from New York City, New York, USA. He came into this world on 7th July of the year 1930 which has now made him reach at the age of 88. Cardinal was born to his parents Theodore E. McCarrick and Margaret T. McCarrick.

His father was a ship captain whereas his mother used to work at an automobile parts factory in the Bronx. Cardinal’s father died due to tuberculosis when he was just 3 years old. During his birth, he was named as Theodore Edgar McCarrick.

As a child, Theodore Edgar McCarrick had served as an altar boy at the Church of the Incarnation located in Washington Heights. For his education, he went to study at the Fordham Preparatory School.

After that, Cardinal studied in Switzerland for one year before he returned to the US. Soon after returning, he went to get enrolled at the Fordham University. Later, Theodore Edgar McCarrick again joined St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers from where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1954 and Master of Arts in Theology in 1958.

Cardinal McCarrick: Career

McCarrick was one of the most well-known American cardinals in the world as well as a prolific fundraiser. He was also considered as a power broker in Washington, D.C. where Cardinal was connected to prominent politicians.

He was also known as one of the most Progressive American Bishops and was also the champion for Progressive Catholics active in the social justice causes.

McCarrick retired in the year 2006 when he was 75 years old but he continued to be a prominent figure in the church remaining a globe-trotting diplomat on the behalf of Vatican and occasionally the US State Department.

Prior to that, Cardinal was engaged in sexual conduct with the adult male seminarians over the course of decades and it was considered as an open secret in some of the ecclesial circles. Though many reports about his conduct with adult seminarians were made to the American bishops and the Vatican between the years 1994 and 2008, the details of his sexual proclivities, as well as allegations of the sexual abuse against male minors, weren’t publicly known until the year 2018.

In June of 2018, he was removed from public ministry by the Vatican due to his credible sexual misconduct allegations. Later in July of the same year, the New York Times published the story detailing a pattern of sexual abuse of male seminarians and the minors.

McCarrick’s resignation from the College of Cardinals was accepted by Pope Francis in July 2018. After the investigation of a church, he was found guilty of sexual crimes against the adults and minors and he was also dismissed from the clergy in February of 2019.

Besides that, Cardinal is the most senior church official in modern times to be laicized and is believed to be the 1st-cardinal ever to be laicized for sexual misconduct.
