Following his graduation from law school, Don started working in campaign finance law in a law firm Patton Boggs based at Washington, D.C. After that, from 1999 up until 2008, Don was the chief counsel for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).
In 2008, Don was nominated by George W. Bush as a Republican-selected member of the Federal Election Commission. In 24th June 2008, he was confirmed by the United States Senate and shortly after sworn. Later on September 2013, Don resigned from Federal Election Commission.
Don returned back to the law firm Patton Boggs after his resignation. And in 2014, he moved to the law firm of Jones Day in Washington, D.C.
